Cobles were sturdy little boats that were designed to be launched off the gently sloping but often stormy beaches of the North and North East coast. They were used for fishing and foying (tending shipping). This scene shows two of the small boats at the mouth of Cullercoats harbour, near Tynemouth. John Falconer Slater painted many scenes around Cullercoats.
