EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print showcases an advertisement for Romeo y Julieta cigars, a renowned Cuban brand that traces its roots back to 1875. Inspired by Shakespeare's tragic love story, the founders Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia named their cigars after the iconic characters. The logo proudly exhibits several gold medals earned by the brand at various international expositions between 1885 and 1900. However, it was not until Jose Pepin Rodriguez Fernandez acquired Romeo y Julieta in 1903 that the brand soared to new heights. Fernandez, formerly leading the Cabanas factory in Havana, joined forces with his firm Rodriguez, Arguelles y Cia to take over this beloved cigar label. The image itself transports us to a romantic scene reminiscent of "Romeo and Juliet". A couple stands on a colorful balcony against a backdrop of stunning architecture in Cuba. The man holds a lit cigar while gazing passionately at his ladylove. This evokes both romance and drama associated with Shakespeare's play. With Spanish text adorning the advertisement, it pays homage to local industry and culture. This postcard-like print captures the essence of late 19th-century aesthetics while also hinting at early 20th-century charm. Preserved by The Print Collector29 collection, this historical piece serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Romeo y Julieta cigars – an emblematic brand that has captivated aficionados worldwide for over a century.
