This print captures the essence of Cliffords Inn, one of the oldest and most significant Inns of Chancery in London. Taken around 1935, this image showcases the architectural beauty and historical importance of this renowned establishment. Cliffords Inn stood proudly between Fetter Lane, Cliffords Inn Passage, Fleet Street, and Chancery Lane in the heart of the City of London. Founded back in 1344, it served as a hub for legal professionals until its dissolution in 1903. Sadly, much of its original structure was demolished just a year before this photograph was taken. The picture portrays an avenue adorned with traditional lampposts that guide visitors through this iconic location. The monochrome palette adds a timeless charm to the scene while emphasizing every intricate detail on these historic buildings. As you gaze at this snapshot frozen in time, you can almost feel the weighty presence of centuries-old law within these walls. It is a testament to British heritage and serves as a reminder of how architecture can tell stories from bygone eras. This remarkable piece comes from "Wonderful London". Volume 1 edited by Arthur St John Adcock—a publication that aimed to showcase various aspects of England's capital city during that era. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast or simply appreciate glimpses into history, this print will transport you back to a different time and place—the vibrant streetscape surrounding Cliffords Inn in 1930s London.
