Sauce for the Gander, 1871. Artist: Joseph Swain
Sauce for the Gander, 1871. A working man sits down to his evening meal. His wife, however, is still working. This cartoon relates to the strike of engineers at Newcastle. The strike had been called in support of a reduction of working hours to nine, and had lasted 19 weeks. After a compromise was reached that allowed for a reduction in the working week of three hours, to make the total amount 54, the men went back to work. The womans work, however, is never done. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 14, 1871

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a thought-provoking print that captures the stark reality of gender inequality in the 19th century. In this satirical cartoon by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, we witness a powerful metaphor unfold before our eyes. The scene depicts a working-class man sitting comfortably at his dinner table, enjoying his evening meal. However, his wife remains on her knees beside him, tirelessly scrubbing away at some laundry. This image serves as a poignant commentary on the societal expectations placed upon women during this era. The context behind this artwork lies in the strike of engineers in Newcastle who fought for reduced working hours. After enduring a grueling 19-week strike and reaching a compromise that slightly decreased their workweek to 54 hours, these men returned to their jobs. Yet, despite their victory for improved conditions, it becomes evident through this illustration that women were left behind. While men could enjoy domestic bliss and leisure time after work, women were burdened with never-ending household chores. The print highlights not only the disparity between genders but also emphasizes how little progress had been made towards achieving equality during this period. Through its intricate engravings and black-and-white composition, "Sauce for the Gander" serves as an important historical document shedding light on social dynamics of the past. It reminds us of how far we have come in terms of gender equality while urging us to continue striving for progress even today.
