EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene from Lord Byron's renowned poem, Mazeppa, published in 1819. Inspired by a passage from Voltaire's Charles XII, the narrative revolves around Mazeppa, a Polish nobleman who finds himself entangled in an illicit affair with another nobleman's wife. As punishment for his transgression, he is stripped and bound to a wild horse that is mercilessly whipped into madness. Together they embark on an arduous journey across the plains of Ukraine until the horse collapses lifeless. In this image, we witness Mazeppa's near-death state as he is rescued by Cossacks and eventually rises to become a Tartar prince within their ranks. The original inspiration for this character was Ivan Stepanovitch, a Polish nobleman whose story fascinated Byron. The artwork captures the essence of Romanticism through its portrayal of nature's untamed beauty and the raw emotions evoked by such harrowing circumstances. The white wolf chasing them symbolizes both wilderness and terror while highlighting Mazeppa's desperate attempt to escape his undignified fate. Through this print, we are transported back to 19th century England where literature flourished alongside artistic expression. It serves as a reminder of how poetry can captivate our imaginations and explore complex themes such as love, betrayal, punishment, and redemption. Created by Anon (the artist), this aquatint print offers us glimpses into history while showcasing the talent behind it all – Lord Byron himself – along with influences from Voltaire’s work. This piece truly encapsulates the power of art to transcend time and connect us with profound human experiences.
