Whitehaven, Harbour from the East, Cumberland, 20th century. Artist: CM Dixon

Whitehaven, Harbour from the East, Cumberland, 20th century. Town and port on the coast of Cumbria, England. Historically a part of Cumberland. Whitehavens prosperity during the 18th and 19th centuries was based on tobacco and coal. After the Acts of Union 1707 with Scotland the port of Glasgow began to take over Whitehavens tobacco trade. By the second half of the 18th century there was a marked decline in shipping tobacco via Whitehaven which led subsequently to the creation of Glasgows Tobacco Lords

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Whitehaven, a historic town and port nestled on the picturesque coast of Cumbria, England. Taken in the 20th century by artist CM Dixon, it showcases the magnificent view of Whitehaven Harbour from the East. Once a thriving hub of trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, Whitehaven's prosperity was primarily fueled by tobacco and coal. However, with the Acts of Union in 1707 between England and Scotland, Glasgow emerged as a formidable competitor in the tobacco trade industry. Consequently, Whitehaven experienced a significant decline in shipping tobacco through its harbor. The image provides an elevated perspective that allows us to appreciate both the industrial character of this coastal town and its breathtaking natural surroundings. The rooftops dotting the landscape serve as reminders of its rich history as an important trading center. Whitehaven's charm lies not only in its maritime heritage but also in its stunning geographical features. With sweeping vistas extending towards the sea, this photograph encapsulates both man-made structures and nature's beauty harmoniously coexisting. CM Dixon skillfully captures this unique blend of history and geography through his lens. This remarkable aerial view offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in Whitehaven's past while appreciating its enduring allure today.
