Gull's medical career began in earnest when he was appointed as a house surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London in 1843. He later became a professor of clinical surgery at the Royal Free Hospital and served as the personal physician to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. However, it was his association with the Jack the Ripper case that would cast a dark shadow over his reputation. In 1888, during the infamous series of brutal murders in the Whitechapel district of London, Gull was rumored to have been the prime suspect due to his close relationship with several of the victims and his knowledge of anatomy.
