The Comet 1, manufactured by de Havilland Aircraft Company, was a trailblazing aircraft that ushered in the jet age with its revolutionary pressurized cabin, allowing for more comfortable and longer-distance air travel. However, on 2 May 1953, during an exceptionally heavy tropical thunderstorm over India, G-ALYV, operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), suffered a catastrophic disintegration, resulting in the loss of all on board. The cause of the disaster was later determined to be metal fatigue in the wings, which had gone undetected during maintenance checks.
