EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of intense bravery and determination as firemen battle a devastating blaze at St Davids Church in Islington, London. The year is 1935, between the wars, when Europe was still reeling from the aftermath of World War I. The image showcases the sheer scale of the emergency response, with a hundred firemen and twenty engines summoned to combat this serious inferno. As the firemen arrived on scene, they were met with an alarming sight - the church's roof already engulfed in flames. Undeterred by this daunting challenge, they swiftly erected towering water jets measuring 280 feet to douse the raging fire. However, their valiant efforts could not prevent tragedy from striking; shortly after their arrival, the weight of destruction proved too much for St Davids Church as its roof dramatically collapsed. The burnt-out shell depicted in this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience and vulnerability. It stands as a testament to those brave firefighters who risked their lives to protect their community during one of London's darkest moments. Captured by Planet News photographers from TopFoto. co. uk on February 11th, 1935, this monochrome image transports us back in time to witness history unfold before our eyes. Its inclusion within Europeana photography archives ensures that future generations can appreciate not only the devastation caused by fires but also honor those who selflessly fought against them.
