A Daniel Come to Judgement!, 1880. Artist: Joseph Swain
A Daniel Come to Judgement!, 1880. The ghost of Daniel O Connell is shown telling an armed Irish agitator to lay down his weapon. Just as the new Liberal government celebrated its 1880 election victory, a wave of violence in Ireland was reaching a climax. From America came reports of a new secret society, the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood, which aimed to free Ireland from English rule. Many acts of violence were taking place and both English and Irish politicians were seemingly unable to reach any agreement that would even begin to satisfy both sides. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 23, 1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "A Daniel Come to Judgement!, 1880" artist Joseph Swain brings to life a pivotal moment in Irish history. The image depicts the ghost of renowned statesman Daniel O'Connell confronting an armed Irish agitator, urging him to lay down his weapon. Against the backdrop of political turmoil and escalating violence in Ireland, this powerful scene captures the struggle for freedom from English rule. As the new Liberal government celebrated its recent election victory, tensions were reaching a climax in Ireland. Reports emerged from America about a secret society called the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood, dedicated to liberating their homeland. Acts of violence were rampant, leaving both English and Irish politicians at an impasse with no viable solution that could appease both sides. This haunting engraving by Swain serves as a scathing satire on the state of affairs during this turbulent time. Rendered in monochrome black and white, it evokes a sense of foreboding and unrest. The presence of Daniel O'Connell's ghost symbolizes hope for peaceful resolution amidst chaos. With meticulous attention to detail, Swain masterfully portrays the intensity between these two figures – one representing violent agitation while the other embodies diplomacy and reason. This thought-provoking artwork not only reflects upon 19th-century politics but also raises questions about power dynamics, heritage, and warfare. The collaboration between artists Daniel O'Connell, John Tenniel (creator), and Joseph Swain has resulted in an enduring piece that continues to resonate today. Through this print, we are reminded of Ireland's tumultuous past while contemplating how historical events shape our present reality.
