No You Don t!, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain

No You Don t!, 1885. The British Lion warns the Russian Bear not to cross over into Afghanistan, seen in the distance in this cartoon. News had recently come in that Russia was planning to advance upon Penjdeh, held by Afghanistan. In return Afghan troops advanced to a position that Russia considered threatening. Discussions were continuing about where the frontier should be and, to the consternation of many, Britains part in the discussion had been transferred to the Frenchman, M de Lessar. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 14, 1885

No You Don't!, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful political cartoon that captures the tensions and complexities of foreign affairs in the late 19th century. In this allegorical depiction, Joseph Swain skillfully portrays the British Lion standing tall and resolute, warning the Russian Bear against encroaching into Afghanistan. The backdrop of the distant Afghan landscape adds depth to the scene, symbolizing the disputed territory at stake. The cartoon was created amidst discussions about defining borders between Russia and Afghanistan, with Britain's involvement controversially handed over to French diplomat M de Lessar. Swain's use of animals as representative figures enhances both satire and caricature within this print. The majestic British Lion embodies strength and authority while confronting its formidable opponent, the Russian Bear. This visual metaphor highlights not only geopolitical power dynamics but also emphasizes national pride and protectionism. The monochrome engraving technique employed by John Tenniel further accentuates the gravity of this political issue. The black-and-white composition allows viewers to focus on intricate details such as facial expressions and body language, intensifying their impact. "No You Don't!, 1885" serves as a historical testament to an era marked by imperial rivalries and territorial disputes. It encapsulates a pivotal moment in international relations when nations jostled for influence in far-flung regions like Afghanistan. Through artful storytelling, Swain invites contemplation on foreign policy decisions while reminding us that even in cartoons lies profound commentary on our world's complex realities.
