Evangelista Torricelli, Italian physicist, inventing the mercury barometer, 1643 (1873)

Evangelista Torricelli, Italian physicist and mathematician, inventing the mercury barometer, 1643 (1873). Torricelli (1608-1647) demonstrated that liquid will rise in a tube unless the weight of the column of liquid is equal to the pressure of the air pressing on an equal section of the reservoir of liquid. The height of a column will depend on the density of the liquid used. Thus a column of water would be 9.75m (32 feet), while that of mercury which is approximately 13.5 times denser, would be.736m (29 ins). From The Atmosphere, by Camille Flammarion. (London 1873)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Evangelista Torricelli, the brilliant Italian physicist and mathematician, is captured in this print as he invents the groundbreaking mercury barometer in 1643. Torricelli's revolutionary experiment demonstrated that a liquid will rise in a tube until its weight equals the pressure exerted by the air on an equal section of the reservoir. This pivotal discovery paved the way for our understanding of atmospheric pressure and its impact on weather forecasting. In this monochrome engraving from 1873, we witness Torricelli immersed in his scientific apparatus, meticulously measuring and calculating with utmost precision. His determination to unravel nature's mysteries shines through as he explores concepts such as density and metal properties while utilizing mathematics to decipher their implications. The significance of Torricelli's invention becomes apparent when considering the varying heights of columns based on different liquids' densities. A column of water would reach an impressive height of 9.75m (32 feet), whereas mercury, being approximately 13.5 times denser than water, would only ascend to a modest . 736m (29 inches). This remarkable image not only captures a pivotal moment in scientific history but also pays tribute to Torricelli's ingenuity and dedication to advancing our understanding of physics and atmospheric phenomena. It serves as a testament to his enduring legacy within both Italy and the international scientific community.
