Fresh Paint!, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain

Fresh Paint!, 1885. This cartoon depicts Britannia, holding the olive branch of peace, being touched-up by the new Conservative Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, and Lord Randolph Churchill who had become Secretary for India. Following the resignation of the Liberal government after their defeat over the Budget, Lord Salisbury had taken some time before confirming he was able to form a government. A General Election was not therefore called, the two parties simply changing sides in the House. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 4, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Fresh Paint!, 1885" captures a significant moment in British political history. Created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this satirical cartoon depicts Britannia, the allegorical figure representing Britain, being touched-up by Lord Salisbury and Lord Randolph Churchill. The artwork symbolizes the transition of power from the Liberal government to the Conservative Party. The resignation of the Liberal government after their defeat over the Budget led to Lord Salisbury's appointment as Prime Minister. However, before confirming his ability to form a new government, he took some time. As a result, no General Election was called; instead, both parties simply changed sides in Parliament. In this caricatured scene, Britannia holds an olive branch of peace while standing on a ladder. She is being carefully retouched by Lord Salisbury and Lord Randolph Churchill who had become Secretary for India at that time. The image reflects not only political change but also highlights key figures in British politics during the late 19th century. With its monochrome engraving style and attention to detail, this print serves as a historical document capturing an important moment in British politics during that era. It showcases Joseph Swain's skillful satire and John Tenniel's artistic contribution to Punch magazine where it was originally published on July 4th, 1885. Overall, "Fresh Paint!, 1885" provides viewers with insight into the complexities of political transitions within Britain's conservative landscape during this period while offering a glimpse into Victorian-era satire through artistry and wit.
