Guillaume Postel, 16th century French linguist, astronomer and diplomat
Guillaume Postel, 16th century French linguist, astronomer and diplomat. An expert in Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Latin, Postel (1510-1581) was sent to the court of Suleiman the Magnificent by Francis I of France, who was seeking an alliance with Turkey. He was also charged with acquiring Eastern manuscripts for the French royal library. Postel collected, translated and published numerous important Greek, Hebrew and Arabic texts, making a major contribution to late Renaissance European scientific discourse. He was an advocate of the unification of the different branches of Christianity and of religious universalism, believing that Judaism, Islam and Christianity could be unified once they could be shown to have common foundations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Guillaume Postel, a prominent figure in 16th-century France. A man of many talents, Postel was not only a linguist but also an astronomer and diplomat. His expertise extended to languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, making him a valuable asset for Francis I of France. Sent by the French monarch to the court of Suleiman the Magnificent in Turkey, Postel's mission was two-fold. Firstly, he aimed to establish an alliance between France and Turkey while acquiring Eastern manuscripts for the royal library back home. Secondly, his passion for knowledge led him to collect, translate, and publish significant texts from various cultures including Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic. Postel's contributions played a crucial role in shaping late Renaissance European scientific discourse. Beyond his scholarly pursuits though, he advocated for religious unity among different branches of Christianity as well as other faiths like Judaism and Islam. He firmly believed that these religions could be unified if their common foundations were emphasized. In this engraving portrait captured during his time period by an unknown creator or artist known only as "The Print Collector" we see Guillaume Postel with a distinguished beard symbolizing wisdom and experience. This image serves as a testament to his dedication towards education and scholarship which made him one of the most influential figures of his era.
