Julius Caesar, Roman soldier and statesman
Julius Caesar, Roman soldier and statesman. Julius Caesar (c100-44 BC) was one of Romes most capable generals, as demonstrated by his conquest of Gaul in the 50s BC. After becoming embroiled in the civil strife that accompanied the disintegration of the Roman Republic, in 48 BC he crossed the River Rubicon, took Rome and effectively became the first citizen. His presumed desire to abandon the Republic as a form of government and return to monarchy led to his assassination in the Roman Senate in 44 BC. Engraving from the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Vol. XXII, (London, 1827)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the formidable figure of Julius Caesar, a renowned Roman soldier and statesman. With his strong, chiseled features and determined gaze, Caesar exudes an air of authority and leadership. Adorned with a laurel wreath upon his head, symbolizing victory and achievement, he stands as a testament to his military triumphs. Julius Caesar's legacy is deeply intertwined with the turbulent times in which he lived. Rising through the ranks of the Roman Republic, he proved himself as one of Rome's most capable generals by conquering Gaul in the 50s BC. However, it was during the disintegration of the Republic that Caesar made his mark on history. In 48 BC, crossing the River Rubicon became a pivotal moment for him as he seized Rome and effectively became its first citizen. His ambition to abandon republican rule in favor of monarchy ultimately led to his tragic demise at the hands of assassins within the Roman Senate in 44 BC. This nineteenth-century print captures both the physicality and essence of this influential historical figure. Created by an unknown artist but preserved through time by Ann Ronan Pictures, it serves as a powerful reminder of Julius Caesar's significant contributions to ancient Rome's political landscape.
