EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Marco Polo, the renowned Venetian traveller and merchant of the 13th century. Alongside his father Niccolo and uncle Matteo, Marco embarked on a remarkable journey from Venice to Asia in 1271. Their expedition led them along the legendary Silk Road until they finally reached the illustrious court of Kublai Khan after three arduous years. The trio spent an incredible 17 years in China before eventually returning home to Italy in 1295. Marco's extraordinary experiences didn't end there, as he was later imprisoned by the Genoese. It was during this time that he penned his famous travelogue, "Il Milione" recounting his awe-inspiring adventures across distant lands while captive. The image captures Marco Polo's profile with a distinguished beard and medieval attire, reflecting both his Italian heritage and the era in which he lived. A commemorative medal adorns the obverse side of this print, symbolizing his significant contributions as an explorer and merchant. This photograph transports us back to a time when exploration and trade were at their peak, evoking a sense of wonderment for those who dare to venture beyond familiar horizons. Marco Polo's legacy continues to inspire generations with tales of bravery, discovery, and cultural exchange that transcend centuries.
