EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of religious utensils from the early 16th century. Created by artist Henry Shaw in 1843, it is a copy of a detail from John Schoorel's painting depicting the Death of the Virgin. The image provides an insightful glimpse into the principal religious items used during that period. Intriguingly, leaning against the wall is a brush known as an aspersorium or sprinkler, which was utilized for sprinkling holy water. Adjacent to it stands a small vase serving as the holy water vat. On the table lies an open psalter, while dangling nearby is a string of beads representing a rosary. Above the cupboard and behind the candlesticks hangs a folding altar-table, adding to its spiritual ambiance. This remarkable illustration originates from Henry Shaw's book titled "Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from Seventh to Seventeenth Centuries" published in London. The vivid colors and intricate details bring this historical scene to life, transporting viewers back in time to witness these sacred objects first-hand. It serves as both an educational tool and artistic masterpiece, shedding light on religious practices prevalent during this era. With its rich symbolism and cultural significance, this print offers us valuable insights into Christian traditions and interior design elements cherished centuries ago.
