Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, English poet and politician, c1890. Milnes (1809-1885) was a member of the literary set known as the Apostles Club. Elected a Conservative MP for Pontefract in 1837, he became a political associate of Palmerston, who raised him to the peerage in 1863.
