Sir William Crookes, English physicist and chemist, c1900s. Artist: Spy
Sir William Crookes, English physicist and chemist, c1900s. After studying at the Royal College of Chemistry, London, Crookes went on to make significant contributions in several fields of science. He invented the radiometer (1873-1876), a device that responds to light or other electromagnetic radiation (which led to research in vacuum physics), and the spinthariscope (1903) which made individual alpha particles visible. He also discovered the element thallium, and was an authority on sanitation and agriculture. This is a cartoon from the magazine Vanity Fair

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sir William Crookes, a renowned English physicist and chemist from the early 1900s. The artist behind this striking portrait is Spy, also known as Sir Leslie Ward, who skillfully captures Crookes' distinguished features. With his spectacles perched on his nose and a neatly trimmed beard framing his face, Crookes exudes an air of wisdom and expertise. Having studied at the prestigious Royal College of Chemistry in London, Crookes made significant contributions to various scientific fields throughout his career. He invented the radiometer between 1873 and 1876—an ingenious device that responds to light or electromagnetic radiation—leading to groundbreaking research in vacuum physics. In addition, he developed the spinthariscope in 1903, enabling individual alpha particles to become visible. Crookes' scientific achievements extended beyond these inventions; he also discovered the element thallium and became an authority on sanitation and agriculture. His profound knowledge earned him recognition as one of the most influential scientists of his time. This cartoon-style portrait not only immortalizes Sir William Crookes but also pays homage to his remarkable contributions to science. It serves as a testament to his pioneering spirit and enduring legacy within the realms of chemistry and physics during the turn of the century.
