Fault detector JLP01_08_076822

NORFOLK. A worker walking along a section of the Fens gas pipeline, operating a holiday detector to check that the pipe is properly sealed with no faults in the wrapping around the pipe.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a crucial moment in the construction of the Fens gas pipeline. In this image, a dedicated worker can be seen walking along a section of the pipeline, diligently operating a holiday detector to ensure that the pipe is flawlessly sealed with no faults in its wrapping. The Fens gas pipeline project commenced in June 1967 and was an impressive collaboration between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 skilled men were involved in laying these colossal 36-inch diameter steel pipes, which stretched from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire, where it connected with the next phase of construction. Spanning across four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches, this engineering marvel symbolizes human ingenuity at its finest. The workers' dedication and expertise ensured that communities would soon benefit from a reliable supply of North Sea gas. This photograph not only showcases their hard work but also serves as a testament to their commitment towards building essential infrastructure for future generations. It provides us with a glimpse into an era when progress was marked by physical labor rather than digital advancements. Let us appreciate these unsung heroes who played an integral role in shaping our modern world through their tireless efforts on projects like the Fens gas pipeline.
