EDITORS COMMENTS
Juan Velázquez de León (?-1520): A Spanish Conqueror in the Aztec Empire This engraving depicts Juan Velázquez de León, a prominent Spanish conquistador who played a significant role in the early exploration and conquest of Mexico during the 16th century. The image is taken from the Atlas Pintoresco e Historico de los Estados Unidos de México, published in 1885. Velázquez de León was born in Spain and arrived in the Americas in 1511, initially serving under Hernán Cortés in his conquest of the Aztec Empire. In 1518, Velázquez de León was appointed governor of Cuba and later led an expedition to explore and colonize the Yucatan Peninsula. His forces encountered the Maya people, and he established the settlement of Campeche in 1540. Despite his successes, Velázquez de León faced challenges from other Spanish conquistadors, including Hernán Cortés, who accused him of mismanagement and disobedience. Velázquez de León was eventually recalled to Spain to answer for these allegations, and he died in prison in 1520. This colorful engraving captures the image of Velázquez de León in the modern age, dressed in the attire of a Spanish conquistador. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and leadership, reflecting his role as a key figure in the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The rich colors and intricate details of the engraving serve to highlight the historical significance of this important figure in the annals of Latin American history.
