EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured stipple engraving by Pancrace Bessa, titled "Les Insectes," is a captivating display of various leaf beetles from the Coleoptera order, as depicted in Charles Malos' seminal work published in Paris in 1820 by Louis Janet. The meticulously detailed illustration showcases an array of Galeruca species 1, Aulacophora analis 2, Cyclotrypema furcata 3, Donacia vittata 4, Cucujus clavipes 5, Pyrrhidium sanguineum 6, and Chlorophorus varius 7. The Galeruca beetles, also known as leaf beetles or callidids, are characterized by their flat, oval bodies and varied coloration. The Aulacophora analis, with its distinctive dorsal stripe, can be seen in the top left corner. The Cyclotrypema furcata, with its elongated legs, is depicted in the bottom left. The Donacia vittata, a common pest of willows, is illustrated in the top right corner, while the Cucujus clavipes, or flat bark beetle, is shown in the bottom right. The Pyrrhidium sanguineum, also known as the seven-spotted lady beetle or ladybug, is a popular and iconic beetle, easily recognizable by its bright red body and black spots. The Chlorophorus varius, or the long-legged lady beetle, is depicted in the center, with its long legs and greenish-yellow body. The intricacy and beauty of this engraving are a testament to the dedication and skill of Pancrace Bessa and the scientific community of the early 19th century. The various leaf beetles, each with their unique features, offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the insect world.
