Biplane Burgess Cody Derby Final Grahame Handicap Hendon Michelin Raynham Speed Start Turner Wright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the thrilling start of the Speed Handicap Final at the Aerial Derby held at Hendon on 8th June 1912. Three intrepid aviators, each representing distinguished aviation companies of the time, line up at the starting gate, ready to take off in their respective aircraft. On the far left, we see the Michelin Cup Biplane piloted by Thomas Sopwith, a British racing driver and aviation pioneer, who had already made a name for himself in motor racing and aviation. The Michelin Cup Biplane, a two-seat monoplane, was a sleek and powerful machine, custom-built for Sopwith by the Sopwith Aviation Company. Next to Sopwith is Raynham, the pilot of the ABC Burgess-Wright biplane. The ABC Company, founded by aviation pioneers Glenn Curtiss and J.D. Ryan, was a leading manufacturer of aircraft engines and airplanes. Raynham's Burgess-Wright biplane, with its distinctive pusher propeller, was a versatile and reliable machine, well-suited for both military and civilian use. On the right, we find Turner, the pilot of the Grahame-White Biplane. Grahame-White Aviation, founded by Percy Pilcher and Claude Grahame-White, was one of the oldest and most reputable aviation companies in the world. Turner's Grahame-White Biplane, a two-seat monoplane, was a popular choice among pilots for its stability and maneuverability. As the starting gun fired, these brave aviators would race against each other, their aircraft engines roaring, their wings slicing through the air, and their hearts pounding with excitement and adrenaline. The Speed Handicap Final at Hendon was a testament to the spirit of competition and innovation that defined the early days of aviation. This photograph is a reminder of a time when mankind first took to the skies, and the thrill of flight was a new and wondrous experience.
