Coventry City Football Club - Alf Wood portrait. Alf Wood: 1935-1959

Coventry City Football Club - Alf Wood portrait.
Alf Wood: 1935-1959, 246 appearance.
FEW players can say they made their final appearance for a club some 20 years after their debut, but such is the boast of goalkeeper Alf Wood. He appeared in Citys Division 2 side in 1937-38 and in the promotion winning side of 1958-59, at the age of 43 becoming the third oldest player to play in League football since the war and the oldest City player ever. He signed for City in 1935, after playing for Nuneaton Town and Sutton Town. As reserve to Bill Morgan he made only two appearances prior to World War II and during the war he was a guest for Northampton Town.
Towards the end of the war he contracted spinal meningitis and it was feared he would never play again.
He recovered, however, and re-signed for City in 1945 and went on to make 260 consecutive appearances (218 of them in the Football League) over the next six seasons.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Alf Wood, a true icon of Coventry City Football Club. With his piercing gaze and determined expression, Wood's portrait captures the essence of a player who dedicated over two decades to his beloved team. Wood's remarkable career spanned from 1935 to 1959, during which he made an impressive 246 appearances for Coventry City. Few players can boast such longevity in their footballing journey, but Wood's dedication was unparalleled. He witnessed both the lows and highs of the club, playing in Division 2 in 1937-38 and later being part of the promotion-winning side in 1958-59. What sets Wood apart is not just his incredible tenure at Coventry City but also his resilience. Despite contracting spinal meningitis towards the end of World War II, it seemed that his dreams on the pitch were shattered. However, against all odds, he fought back and returned stronger than ever. Signing with Coventry City again in 1945 after recovering from illness, Wood went on to make an astonishing run of 260 consecutive appearances (218 in the Football League) over six seasons. This stunning portrait serves as a testament to Alf Wood's indomitable spirit and enduring legacy within Coventry City Football Club.
