St Bartholomews Church, Lostwithiel, with newly pollarded trees in the churchyard. The practice takes place every 20 years or so to stop the trees getting too large. The church is 12th century and was probably built by Robert of Cardinam, who was Lord of the town and owner of much property in the area, on foundations of an earlier chapel which may have dated from King Arthurs time. EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the timeless beauty of St Bartholomews Church in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, this print transports us back to March 1983. The church, dating back to the 12th century and believed to have been built by Robert of Cardinam, stands proudly amidst a picturesque landscape. In this particular shot, we are drawn to the newly pollarded trees that grace the churchyard. This traditional practice is carried out every couple of decades to ensure that these majestic trees do not grow too large. The photographer, Jonathan Barker, skillfully captures the essence of this historic site with its towering spire and iconic clock face. The intricate details of the twigs delicately framing the image add a touch of natural charm. It is fascinating to imagine how these very same branches may have witnessed centuries worth of history unfold within their vicinity. As we delve into Lostwithiel's rich past through this photograph, it is intriguing to consider that beneath St Bartholomews Church lies an even older chapel rumored to date back as far as King Arthur's time. This connection between ancient legends and architectural marvels adds an air of mystery and enchantment. This remarkable print from Royal Cornwall Museum serves as a testament to both our fascination with heritage preservation and our appreciation for Cornwall's breathtaking landscapes.
