Carclew House, Mylor, Cornwall. Probably 1912
The courtyard and carriage block at Carclew House. Originally owned by the Bonython family, the house and estate were purchased by William Lemon (1696-1760) in 1749 who employed the architect Thomas Edwards to enlarge and modernise the house in the style of Palladios Villa Ragona. The house was further extended by Sir William Lemon (1748-1824) in the early 19th century by architect William Wood. It was destroyed by fire in 1934 but one wing was restored in the late 1930s to house refugees. There are a few ruins preserved. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur and history of Carclew House in Mylor, Cornwall. Taken around 1912 by photographer Arthur William Jordan, it captures the courtyard and carriage block of this magnificent estate. Originally owned by the esteemed Bonython family, Carclew House underwent significant transformations under the ownership of William Lemon in 1749. Employing architect Thomas Edwards, Lemon enlarged and modernized the house to reflect Palladios Villa Ragona style. In the early 19th century, Sir William Lemon further extended the property with architect William Wood's expertise. Tragically, a devastating fire ravaged Carclew House in 1934; however, a wing was later restored during late 1930s to provide shelter for refugees. Today, only a few ruins remain as poignant reminders of its former glory. The photograph offers a glimpse into an era when great houses like Carclew were symbols of wealth and power. The impressive architecture stands tall against the backdrop of lush Cornish landscapes. The stables housed majestic horses while carriages awaited their passengers nearby. Carclew House represents more than just bricks and mortar; it embodies centuries of heritage tied to important Cornish families who once called it home. This image invites us to imagine life within these walls - elegant balls held in opulent halls or leisurely rides through picturesque countryside. Preserved for posterity at Royal Cornwall Museum, this print allows us to appreciate not only architectural splendor but also Cornwall
