Wootton Bassett Junction Station, c. 1960

6100 Class tank locomotive No. 6129 waits in steam at Wootton Bassett Junction Station in the early 1960 s. Sited on the original London to Bristol main line, this was the third in a succession of GWR built stations to serve the town of Wootton Bassett, following on from Wootton Bassett Road and Wootton Bassett Station. The æJunction was added to the stations title following the opening of the South Wales and Bristol Direct Railway in 1903 for which Wootton Bassett became an important junction station

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1960s, capturing a moment frozen in time at Wootton Bassett Junction Station. Standing proudly amidst billowing clouds of steam is the magnificent 6100 Class tank locomotive No. 6129, patiently awaiting its next journey. Located on the original London to Bristol main line, this station was one of a trio built by the Great Western Railway (GWR) to serve the town of Wootton Bassett. Following in the footsteps of Wootton Bassett Road and Wootton Bassett Station, it earned its distinctive name with the addition of "Junction" after becoming an important hub for travelers upon the opening of the South Wales and Bristol Direct Railway in 1903. The charm exuded by this photograph lies not only in its historical significance but also in its ability to transport us back to a simpler era. The vintage architecture and classic signage showcased here evoke nostalgia for a time when train travel was at its peak. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded that stations like Wootton Bassett Junction were once bustling centers of activity and connection—a gateway between towns and cities. This print serves as both a testament to our rich railway heritage and an invitation to step into history, even if just for a moment.
