Aerial view of Europa Point, Gibraltar
Pictured is an aerial view of Europa Point (the southernmost point of Gibraltar).
The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar is a rocky headland on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
It has an area of just over 2 square miles and a population of 30, 000. It enjoys a strategic location at the western entrance to the Mediterranean, where the straits between Europe and Africa are only 14 km wide.
Royal Air Force Gibraltar is a unique station situated in the shadow of the Rock adjacent to the border with Spain. The airfield was built at the start of the Second World War and is an integral part of Gibraltarian life as the only road into Spain crosses the runway.
Today there are no military aircraft permanently based at RAF Gibraltar, however, the Station remains at extremely high readiness to support UK military operations.
Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity by Spain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 but Spain still presses claim to Gibraltar, however the Gibraltarians wish to remain British as was demonstrated in 1967 and 2002, when an overwhelming majority voted to retain British sovereignty

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view of Europa Point in Gibraltar showcases the stunning beauty and strategic significance of this British Overseas Territory. Nestled on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a rocky headland spanning just over 2 square miles with a population of approximately 30,000. Situated at the western entrance to the Mediterranean, Gibraltar holds immense importance as it guards the narrow straits between Europe and Africa, which are only 14 km wide. The photograph highlights not only the picturesque landscape but also Royal Air Force (RAF) Gibraltar's unique position adjacent to Spain's border. Originally built during World War II, RAF Gibraltar remains an integral part of Gibraltarian life today. While there are no permanently stationed military aircraft at this airfield anymore, it stands ready to support UK military operations whenever required. The historical context surrounding Gibraltar adds another layer of complexity to its identity. Ceded to Britain by Spain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Spain still asserts its claim over this territory. However, as demonstrated through overwhelming votes in both 1967 and 2002, Gibraltarians strongly desire to maintain their British sovereignty. Cpl Scott Robertson from Armed Forces has skillfully captured this mesmerizing image that encapsulates both natural beauty and geopolitical significance within a single frame.
