EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, in a moment of deep concentration. Taken in 1918, the image shows the Russian Bolshevik revolutionary engrossed in reading Pravda, a prominent newspaper of that time. Lenin's intense gaze and furrowed brow reveal his unwavering dedication to the cause he fought for throughout his life. Born in 1870, Lenin emerged as a key figure within the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party. His involvement in revolutionary politics began during his university years when he studied law. However, Lenin's path was not without obstacles. In 1895, he faced arrest by authorities and endured imprisonment followed by exile to Siberia for four years. Seeking security abroad after leaving Russia in 1906, Lenin became an influential figure among revolutionaries opposing the government from afar. The turning point came with the February Revolution of 1917 when Lenin returned to Russia but had to flee again after a failed workers uprising months later. It was during this tumultuous period that October saw another revolution led by the Bolsheviks overthrowing Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government. Elected Premier of the Soviet Union following their victory, Lenin faced numerous challenges including an assassination attempt which left him wounded in 1918. The strains of revolution and subsequent Civil War took a toll on his health further exacerbated by partial paralysis resulting from a stroke in 1922. This powerful print serves as a testament to Lenin's unwavering commitment to his ideals despite personal hardships and physical setbacks that ultimately shaped both his legacy and Soviet history at large.
