51st Highland Division Stained Glass Window, Vught
In the 1944 fighting to defeat the Germans in Holland the whole area around here became the responsibility of the 51st Div. As a result, the local population remember the 51st not just with memorials but also with gratitude. Vught Town Hall looks a little like a fairyland castle and in it is a special room called the Highland Room. Photographs of returning veterans are displayed and there is this magnificent stained glass Memorial Window carrying the Divisional Badge, which commemorates the liberation of Vught on 26 October 1944. The room is normally in daily working use and if a visit is planned it is wise to contact the Town Hall first to make arrangements. Date: 2001

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of Vught, Holland, stands the historic Town Hall, a structure that bears the distinctive charm of a fairy-tale castle. Within its halls lies a special room, affectionately named the Highland Room, which serves as a testament to the deep-rooted gratitude of the local population towards the 51st Highland Division. During the tumultuous year of 1944, the area around Vught fell under the responsibility of the 51st Highland Division as they valiantly fought to defeat the German forces. The division's unwavering commitment to liberating Holland left an indelible mark on the community, resulting in memorials that extend beyond the traditional monuments. The Highland Room is a living tribute to the 51st Division, with photographs of returning veterans adorning its walls. The room's most striking feature, however, is the magnificent stained glass Memorial Window. This exquisite work of art, bathed in the soft, natural light that filters through the panes, proudly displays the Divisional Badge of the 51st Highland Division. The window commemorates the liberation of Vught on 26 October 1944, a day that will forever be etched in the town's history. The Highland Room is a daily working space and visitors wishing to pay their respects or simply explore this piece of history are encouraged to contact the Vught Town Hall to make arrangements. The room's tranquil atmosphere and the ethereal beauty of the stained glass window create a sanctuary where one can reflect on the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the 51st Highland Division. This photograph, taken in 2001, captures the essence of the Highland Room and the enduring connection between the people of Vught and the 51st Highland Division. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the past, a symbol of gratitude, and a beacon of hope for the future.
