EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of the men of the 4/1st City of London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, as they march through the urban landscape of Peckham, SE London, in the autumn of 1915. At the front, on the left, is Albert Auerbach (1894-1918), a young man with a determined expression on his face as he leads his comrades. The men, dressed in their military uniforms, are a stark contrast to the terraced houses and shops that line the street. The scene is set against the backdrop of the First World War, a time when the lives of these men were forever changed. Many were working-class men, who had left their jobs and homes to answer the call to duty. Education and military training were not luxuries that most could afford, but they were determined to do their part for their country. The horses and dray horses, with their barrels of supplies, add to the sense of industry and purpose. The soldiers, both officers and enlisted men, move in unison, their discipline and determination evident as they make their way through the streets of Peckham Rye. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women of the First World War, and the impact that the conflict had on the urban communities of London and beyond. Albert Auerbach, and the other men in this photograph, are a testament to the courage and resilience of a generation that faced unprecedented challenges with unwavering determination.
