A Sapphire Galaxy: Royal and Other Gifts to Princess Mary on Her Wedding to Viscount Lascelles in February 1922 The wedding of Princess Mary, the daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, to Viscount Lascelles on the 28th of February, 1922, was an event of grandeur and elegance. As the future Countess of Harewood, Mary received an array of exquisite gifts from the British monarchy and other members of the nobility. This photograph captures a selection of the most notable presents, many of which featured Mary's favorite stone, sapphires. The royal family's generosity was evident in the dazzling array of sapphire jewels bestowed upon the bride. The most significant piece was a magnificent sapphire and diamond necklace, a gift from her father, King George V. The necklace, adorned with a large oval sapphire at its center, was a stunning display of royal craftsmanship and the symbol of a father's love for his daughter. Other gifts included a sapphire and diamond bracelet from Queen Mary, a sapphire and diamond tiara, and a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings. The Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, presented a sapphire and diamond brooch, while the Duke and Duchess of Connaught gifted a sapphire and diamond ring. The 1920s were a time of opulence and grandeur, and the gifts given to Princess Mary on her wedding day reflected the era's love for jewels and fine craftsmanship. This photograph serves as a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy and the enduring beauty of sapphires.
