EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de Chalons, Comtesse de Tonnerre (d. 1463): A Regal Portrait in Historical Costume This print depicts Marguerite de Chalons, Comtesse de Tonnerre, a noblewoman of the 15th century. Marguerite was the wife of Olivier de Husson, chamberlain to King Charles VII of France. The image is a hand-colored lithograph by Leopold Massard, based on a figure in a tomb in the college church of Lille, which was part of Bernard de Montfaucon's extensive collection. Marguerite's elegant attire reflects the opulence and grandeur of the late medieval period. She wears a hennin, an iconic tall conical hat that was popular among the European nobility during this time. The hat is adorned with intricate decorations, including a veil that cascades down the back. Marguerite's dress consists of a tunic, which is fitted at the waist and falls to the ground, and mahoitre sleeves, which are voluminous and bell-shaped. The dress is richly embellished with gold and silver threads, pearls, and other precious stones. The overall effect is one of refined luxury and sophistication. The print also provides a glimpse into the historical context of Marguerite's life. As the wife of a chamberlain to the king, she would have been a prominent figure at the royal court. The tomb in which her figure was originally depicted suggests that she was a woman of great importance and wealth, whose legacy was remembered long after her death. This image is a stunning example of historical costume and offers a fascinating window into the world of the European nobility during the late Middle Ages.
