EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Kensington Fire Station in London, as it stood in 1905. Located in Old Court Place near Kensington Church Street, this fire station was home to the last remaining horse-drawn turntable ladder in the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The horses and their carriages, including the fire engines, are seen here in their bays, ready for the next call. In the corner of the image, a man sits at the watchroom desk, keeping a vigilant eye on the station's operations. The London Fire Brigade, which was formed in 1865, had relied on horse-drawn fire engines until the early 20th century when motorised versions became more common. Kensington Fire Station's horse-drawn appliances were a testament to the Edwardian era and the traditional methods of firefighting. The horses were an essential part of the firefighting team, and their strength and agility enabled the firefighters to reach great heights and access hard-to-reach areas. The appliance room in this photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the horses in their stalls and the fire engines in their bays. The horses' harnesses and equipment are meticulously arranged, and the engines are polished and ready for action. The station's interior is simple yet functional, with a sense of order and discipline that reflects the importance of the work carried out by the firefighters. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a bygone era in firefighting, and it offers a unique insight into the daily life of a fire station during the early 1900s. The London Fire Brigade's rich history continues to inspire and inform modern firefighting practices, and this image serves as a reminder of the dedication and courage of the firefighters who came before us.
