EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of surrender on board the HMS San Jose, formerly the Spanish flagship San Josef, during the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. The British fleet, led by Admiral Sir John Jervis, had decisively defeated a larger Spanish fleet under Admiral Don Jose de Cordoba y Ramos in the waters off southern Portugal. In this poignant scene, Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, second in command to Jervis, receives the swords of surrender from the Spanish admiral, symbolizing the end of the battle and the British victory. Dressed in his full uniform, Nelson stands confidently on the deck of the captured Spanish vessel, surrounded by his crew. The Algarve coastline of Portugal can be seen in the distance, a reminder of the strategic importance of this victory in the Anglo-Spanish War (1796-1808). This image, taken from a contemporary print by T. Parker, provides a fascinating glimpse into the 18th century naval warfare and the high stakes of international conflict during this period.
