EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, eight courageous members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), also known as the Suffragettes, embark on their Holiday Campaign in Kent, England, on August 9, 1913. The Gypsy Wanderers, as they came to be known, set out from Lincoln's Inn with a mission to spread awareness of their cause through the rural areas of Kent. Led by the enigmatic Gypsy Queen, Lilly McDonnell, the group travelled in a beautifully decorated cart pulled by a horse named Asquith. Their journey took them to the towns of Halstead, Tonbridge, and Tunbridge Wells, where they distributed copies of their paper, The Suffragette, and rallied support for women's suffrage. The Suffragettes' Holiday Campaign was a bold and innovative tactic to reach out to communities often overlooked by the mainstream suffrage movement. By travelling through the picturesque countryside, they were able to connect with people in a more personal and relatable way, and to bring the suffrage message to areas that may have otherwise been untouched by the movement. This photograph captures a moment in history when a group of determined women set out to challenge the status quo and fight for their right to vote. Their journey represents not only the perseverance and courage of the Suffragettes but also the power of grassroots activism and the importance of spreading knowledge and awareness to effect change.
