EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the dignified presence of Alfred Henry Thesiger, a prominent figure in the 19th-century legal realm. The photograph, taken by Lock & Whitfield in 1880, showcases Lord Justice Thesiger donned in his judicial robes and wig, exuding an air of authority and wisdom. Born into a legal family, Thesiger's career trajectory was destined for greatness. Admitted to the bar in 1862, he swiftly rose through the ranks and became a Queen's Counsel by 1873. His exceptional legal acumen caught the attention of Prince Edward (later King Edward VII), who appointed him as Attorney-General in 1877. At just thirty-nine years old, Thesiger achieved another remarkable milestone when he was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal that same year. This prestigious position on the Court of Appeal solidified his reputation as one of Britain's most esteemed judges. In this portrait, Thesiger gazes confidently at the viewer with piercing eyes that reflect his deep knowledge and experience within the field of law. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this image while emphasizing its historical significance. Lock & Whitfield have masterfully captured not only Thesiger's physical appearance but also his commanding presence and intellectual prowess. This print serves as a testament to Lord Justice Alfred Henry Thesiger's enduring legacy within British jurisprudence during the Victorian era.
