EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the front view of the First Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, taken in 1922. The Goetheanum was a remarkable architectural masterpiece constructed by Rudolf Steiner as the headquarters for his Anthroposophical movement. This unique building, made from wood and concrete, stood as a symbol of Steiner's philosophy and social thinking. Tragically, this magnificent structure met its demise when it was engulfed in flames later that same year. However, this photograph allows us to glimpse its grandeur before its untimely destruction. The intricate details of the building's design are evident even in monochrome; one can imagine how striking it must have been with all its colors. The image showcases not only the impressive architecture but also highlights the surrounding natural beauty. A solitary tree stands tall beside the Goetheanum, adding an element of tranquility to this scene captured almost a century ago. Today, we can appreciate this historical artifact thanks to the Russian State Film and Photo Archive's collection. It serves as a reminder of both Steiner's vision for anthroposophy and his dedication to creating spaces that harmonize with nature. Although replaced by a second Goetheanum built entirely from concrete between 1924 and 1928, this first iteration remains etched in history through photographs like these - preserving a moment frozen in time where philosophy meets artistry.
