Egyptian Bonds, 1882. Artist: Joseph Swain
Egyptian Bonds, 1882. John Bull represents the British Navy, and is tied to a small French sailor. At the right of the cartoon is Arabi Pasha who was generally viewed as the representative of a national movement in Egypt. Others believed him simply to be a rebel against the Khedive and the Sultan. Lord Granville, the Liberal Foreign Secretary is carrying Turkey on his back. This relates to a conference held at Constantinople to consider the situation in Egypt. Britain and France demanded that Arabi be removed from Egypt but this proved fruitless. A Turkish mission arrived at Alexandria, but on the 11th June there was a riot at Alexandria when Europeans were attacked. Lord Granville had to admit that Arabi was in control. However, after a conference with Dervish Pasha of Turkey, Arabi conceded that he would obey the Khedive in maintaining order. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 8, 1882

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Egyptian Bonds, 1882" artist Joseph Swain masterfully captures the intricate political landscape of the time. The cartoon depicts a symbolic representation of various key figures and nations involved in the conflict in Egypt. At the center of the image, John Bull, personifying the British Navy, is bound to a small French sailor. This signifies the alliance between Britain and France during this period. On their right stands Arabi Pasha, who was seen by some as a national hero fighting against oppressive rule but considered a rebel by others. On Lord Granville's back rests Turkey, symbolizing his responsibility as Liberal Foreign Secretary to handle foreign affairs with regard to Egypt. The conference held at Constantinople aimed to address the situation in Egypt but failed when Britain and France demanded Arabi's removal from power. The arrival of a Turkish mission led to tensions escalating on June 11th when Europeans were attacked during riots in Alexandria. Eventually, Lord Granville had no choice but to acknowledge that Arabi was indeed in control. However, after negotiations with Dervish Pasha of Turkey, Arabi agreed to obey Khedive's authority for maintaining order. This complex web of alliances and conflicting interests is brilliantly captured through Swain's satirical caricature style. This historic engraving from Punch magazine provides valuable insight into not only the politics and foreign policy dynamics of that era but also serves as an artistic testament reflecting societal attitudes towards rebellion and colonialism during late 19th-century Europe.
