EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Spotfin Lionfish, Pterois antennata, also known as the Broadbarred Firefish or Pteroide Antennato. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The engraving was created by Carini, with direction from the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring the natural world to life through his art. The Spotfin Lionfish is a venomous marine fish, characterized by its distinctive body shape, covered in venomous spines, and vibrant coloration. The fish in this illustration appears to be lying on a bed of coral, surrounded by various other marine organisms, including the Loiseleuria Procumbens, Alpine Azalea, and other unidentified vegetation. The intricate detailing of the various plants and the textured representation of the coral provide a rich and immersive visual experience, transporting the viewer to the underwater world of the Mediterranean Sea. The Spotfin Lionfish is not a plant or vegetable, but rather an edible fish that is often consumed in various cuisines around the world. The illustration serves as a testament to the natural history of the time, providing a glimpse into the scientific exploration and documentation of the natural world during the 19th century.
