EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the elegant Suspension Pier at Seaview, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England. The pier, designed by the locally born engineer and architect Frank Caws, was a source of pride for the community when it was completed in 1881. The pier's graceful design, featuring a suspended chain suspension system, was a popular attraction for visitors to the coastal resort town. The image, estimated to date from around 1906, captures the essence of the Edwardian era with its promenading couples and well-dressed families enjoying the seaside breeze. The pier's architecture, with its ornate ironwork and intricate details, adds to the overall charm of the scene. Sadly, the pier's beauty was short-lived as it was destroyed in a storm in 1951. The pier's demise marked the end of an era for Seaview and its residents, leaving behind only memories and this photograph as reminders of its former elegance. The Suspension Pier at Seaview was not only a structural marvel but also a symbol of the town's rich history and connection to the sea. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the past and the simpler pleasures of a bygone era.
