Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegance and beauty of yachts under sail, most likely on the picturesque River Fal in Cornwall. Taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer, this glass lantern slide was part of his lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots". Major Gill's talent for capturing stills and cine film made him well-known throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s. He presented his work to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What sets Major Gill's photographs apart is his unique artistic touch. Using an ordinary camera, he took prolific quarter plate slides that were often hand-painted with vibrant colors to enhance their visual impact. This meticulous attention to detail resulted in stunning images that brought out the true essence of Cornwall's natural wonders. The yachts depicted in this particular photograph exude a sense of tranquility as they gracefully glide through calm waters against a backdrop of serene landscapes. It serves as a timeless reminder of the region's rich maritime heritage. Displayed at the Royal Cornwall Museum, this print not only showcases Major Arthur William Gill's exceptional photography skills but also preserves an important piece of Cornish history for generations to come.
