Wider Image - Great Barrier Reef At Risk
The Milky Way is seen in the sky above a path and huts on Lady Elliot Island located north-east of the town of Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia, June 10, 2015. UNESCO World Heritage delegates recently snorkelled on Australias Great Barrier Reef, thousands of coral reefs, which stretch over 2, 000 km off the northeast coast. Surrounded by manta rays, dolphins and reef sharks, their mission was to check the health of the worlds largest living ecosystem, which brings in billions of dollars a year in tourism. Some coral has been badly damaged and animal species, including dugong and large green turtles, are threatened. UNESCO will say on Wednesday whether it will place the reef on a list of endangered World Heritage sites, a move the Australian government wants to avoid at all costs, having lobbied hard overseas. Earlier this year, UNESCO said the reefs outlook was " poor". REUTERS/David Gray

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of Lady Elliot Island, nestled in the heart of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The Milky Way illuminates the night sky above a serene path and huts, creating a mesmerizing contrast between nature's wonders both above and below. In June 2015, UNESCO World Heritage delegates embarked on a crucial mission to assess the health of this iconic ecosystem. Stretching over 2,000 km along Queensland's northeast coast, the Great Barrier Reef is not only an awe-inspiring sight but also a vital source of income through tourism. However, alarming signs of damage have emerged as some coral reefs lay devastated and numerous species face threats to their survival – including dugongs and large green turtles. The fate of this natural wonder hangs in balance as UNESCO deliberates whether to designate it an endangered World Heritage site. The Australian government has fervently campaigned against such classification due to its potential economic repercussions. Earlier this year, UNESCO expressed concerns about the reef's future prospects. Photographer David Gray skillfully captures this pivotal moment when humanity confronts its impact on one of Earth's most precious ecosystems. Through his lens, we are reminded that preserving our planet requires urgent action from governments and individuals alike. Let us hope that these stunning images serve as a powerful reminder for all who witness them – urging us to protect and cherish our fragile environment before it slips away forever.
