EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "New South Wales Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1872, Atlas" a remarkable piece of historical cartography. The atlas was published by Johan Georg Justus Perthes in 1872 and is a testament to his pioneering work as a German publisher. Born in Rudolstadt in 1749, Perthes established his renowned business, Justus Perthes, in Gotha in 1785. The Geographical Branch of the company gained prominence under Wilhelm Perthes (1793-1853), who collaborated with esteemed German geographers such as Heinrich Berghaus and Karl Spruler. Their collective efforts resulted in the publication of Adolf Stieler's influential "and-Atlas" from 1817 to 1823. The legacy continued through Bernard Wilhelm Perthes (1821-1857) until the firm's issuance of the Almanach de Gotha in 1863. This annual publication provided statistical, historical, and genealogical information about countries worldwide. The print itself depicts an engraved image from this historic atlas. Its retro-styled appearance adds an artistic touch that transports us back to Victorian times when engravement was a popular illustrative technique. This vintage piece from Liszt Collection offers us a glimpse into both history and culture. It serves as a reminder of how maps have played an integral role throughout time—guiding explorers and shaping our understanding of the world we inhabit.
