EDITORS COMMENTS
King Henry II of France, also known as Henri II (1519-1559), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard, drawn from a portrait in the gallery of Roger de Gaignières. The illustration is part of the "Costumes Historiques de la France" series published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, or Paul Lacroix, in Paris in 1852. Henry II was the eldest son of King Francis I of France and Queen Claude of France. He ascended to the throne in 1547, following his father's death. Henry II is best known for his military campaigns against the Habsburg Empire, his patronage of the arts, and his marriage to Catherine de' Medici. In this portrait, Henry II is shown wearing the robes of a king, adorned with ermine fur and a jeweled collar. His regal attire is a testament to his status and power. The artist, Leopold Massard, expertly captures the intricate details of the king's clothing, from the folds of the fabric to the precious stones and embroidery. The background of the lithograph is simple, with a plain gold border and a subtle texture that adds depth and dimension to the image. The overall effect is one of elegance and grandeur, fitting for a king of France. This historical document provides a valuable glimpse into the fashion and culture of the French court during the Renaissance period. The intricate details of the lithograph, combined with the historical significance of the subject, make it a treasured addition to any collection of European art or history.
