Constellation of Leo, 1723
Constellation of Leo, 1723. From Uranometria by Johannes Bayer. (Ulm, 1723). German astronomer and lawyer Johann Bayer (1572-1625) invented the system for naming stars using letters from the Greek alphabet, a system still used today for the brighter stars - those visible to the human eye without the aid of a telescope. Uranometria depicts the positions of nearly 1000 stars in addition to those identified by Tycho Brahe. A number of distant galaxies can be observed in Leo by astronomers, and the constellation is associated with several meteor showers, most notably the Leonids, which occur in November every year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Constellation of Leo, 1723" as depicted in Johannes Bayer's renowned work, Uranometria. Bayer, a German astronomer and lawyer, revolutionized star naming by introducing the use of Greek alphabet letters for brighter stars visible to the naked eye. His system remains in use today. Uranometria not only presents the positions of nearly 1000 stars but also includes those identified by Tycho Brahe. The intricate engraving reveals an array of distant galaxies within Leo, making it a fascinating subject for astronomers. Additionally, this constellation is associated with various meteor showers, most notably the annual Leonids occurring every November. The image transports us back to the 18th century when scientific exploration was flourishing. Its monochromatic aesthetic adds an air of elegance and timelessness to this astronomical map. As we gaze upon it, we are reminded of Germany's contributions to both science and astrology during that era. This remarkable print from Heritage Images allows us to appreciate Johannes Bayer's significant role in advancing our understanding of celestial bodies while capturing the majestic essence of Leo – symbolized by its animal counterpart, the lion. It serves as a reminder that even centuries later, humanity continues to marvel at the wonders found beyond our own planet Earth through scientific discovery and exploration.
