EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken around 1960, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is seen with his mother, Princess Alice of Greece, formerly Princess Alice of Battenberg. The image captures a tender moment between mother and son, as they share a warm embrace. Princess Alice, dressed in the simple white habit of the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary, the nursing order she had founded in Greece, adds an air of serene piety to the scene. Born in 1885, Princess Alice was the eldest daughter of Princess Victoria of Hesse and Prince Louis of Battenberg. Her life was marked by tragedy and triumph. She married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903, but their marriage was short-lived, as her husband was exiled from Greece following the country's revolution in 1917. Alice and her children, including Prince Philip, were forced to flee as well, eventually settling in Paris. Despite the hardships she faced, Princess Alice remained dedicated to helping others. She founded the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary in 1912, a nursing order that provided care for the sick and the poor. The order grew to include over 300 sisters and became a vital part of Greek Orthodox religious and charitable life. Princess Alice's commitment to service continued even during World War II, when she sheltered Jewish refugees in her home, risking her own life to save others. For her bravery, she was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust memorial. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the remarkable life of Princess Alice, a woman of deep faith and unwavering compassion. The image of her with her son, Prince Philip, underscores the strong bond between them and the enduring influence of her legacy.
